# Slow Luxor

Five days, one or two sites a morning, and every afternoon your own.

**Days**: 5

**Nights**: 5

**Pace**: Gentle

The route at a glance

Five days give the main visits more room, with one or two sites on most days and generous breaks. Day two includes Luxor Temple late in the day, subject to current hours; the plan is not mornings-only.

The Ramesseum is not a scheduled stop in this outline. It can replace another visit if it interests you, but there is no need to add it simply because a gap appears. Check each route and admission separately: slower pacing does not remove stairs, uneven ground or heat.

[Your days in order](https://luxor101.com/itineraries/slow-luxor#itinerary-sequence)

Ideal traveller

Travellers who want fewer stops per day and more flexibility. A slower schedule may help with heat or fatigue, but it does not establish that the routes are accessible or medically suitable.

Not for

Use this outline when you have five days available. With less time, select fewer places from it or use a shorter itinerary rather than compressing every stop into full days.

Itineraries

## Your days in order

Day 01

### Karnak, and nothing else

**Start**: At the gate when it opens

**Finish**: Out before the middle of the day

Stops

1. [Karnak](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/karnak)

2–3 hours, and you may want to come back

Give Karnak time without trying to cover every corner. Follow the main axis, choose a permitted rest place and consider the Festival Hall if the route is open and your energy allows.

Plan the day

**Heat exposure**: High

**Walking**: Moderate

**Food and rest**: Have breakfast before leaving, carry water and return to town for lunch. Keep the afternoon free to rest or decide what you feel like doing.

**Transport**: A taxi north along the corniche and back. Nothing else today.

**What to skip if tired**: The eastern half of the complex can wait for another visit. A shorter circuit centred on the Hypostyle Hall (a roofed hall supported by rows of columns) still gives you time to study its columns and reliefs.

Day 02

### The museum, then Luxor Temple at dusk

**Start**: Mid-morning — the one late start of the five days

**Finish**: After dark, a short walk from the middle of town

Stops

1. [Luxor Museum](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/luxor-museum)

    1–1.5 hours

Choose a few objects to spend time with, rather than trying to see everything. Confirm opening hours and any seating or access arrangements you need before setting out.

2. [Luxor Temple](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/luxor-temple)

    1–1.5 hours

Consider an evening visit after a long break, if opening hours allow. Its central location can simplify the transfer, but check the entrance route and surfaces against your needs.

Plan the day

**Heat exposure**: Medium

**Walking**: Easy

**Food and rest**: Keep a long break between the museum and temple. Return to your accommodation or another confirmed rest place; arrange the transfers around its location and your needs.

**Transport**: On foot, or a very short taxi ride. No crossing today.

**What to skip if tired**: Skip either visit, or both, if you need a day of rest. A recovery day does not need to include sightseeing.

Day 03

### The Valley of the Kings, on its own

**Start**: At the crossing at first light

**Finish**: Back across before the heat peaks

Stops

1. [Colossi of Memnon](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/colossi-of-memnon) Optional

    15–30 minutes

On the way in, with time to spare and nobody hurrying you.

2. [Valley of the Kings](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/valley-of-the-kings)

    2–3 hours

Choose a small number of tombs after checking their routes and current opening status. Arrange a rest outside the circuit; shade, seating and comfortable indoor temperatures are not guaranteed.

Plan the day

**Heat exposure**: High

**Walking**: Moderate

**Food and rest**: Bring drinking water and arrange a proper meal and seated rest after the circuit, on whichever bank fits your plans. Shorten the visit if heat or fatigue becomes a concern.

**Transport**: Ferry and a west-bank taxi, agreed for a short morning rather than a full one. If mobility is the concern, ask about the vehicle drop-off arrangements at the valley when you agree the ride — the distances inside the site are the part people underestimate.

**What to skip if tired**: The second tomb. One tomb properly, with time to stand still in it, is a good morning — and this plan has four other mornings in it.

Day 04

### Deir el-Bahari, and the hillside if you want it

**Start**: At the crossing at first light

**Finish**: Back across by late morning

Stops

1. [Temple of Hatshepsut](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/temple-of-hatshepsut)

    1–1.5 hours

The temple lies beyond the ridge from the valley. Its approach and terraces are largely exposed, so choose a cooler visiting period when hours allow and adapt to the day’s conditions.

2. [Tombs of the Nobles](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/tombs-of-the-nobles) Optional

1–2 hours, depending on how many tomb groups you visit

An optional hillside visit. Confirm the chosen chapels, their entrances and the transfer; exposed paths and climbs may make this a better stop for another day.

Plan the day

**Heat exposure**: High

**Walking**: Moderate

**Food and rest**: The most exposed morning of the five. Water from the start, and keep the second stop genuinely optional — the temple alone is a complete morning on this plan.

**Transport**: Ferry and taxi. The two stops are on the same hill, so the driving is short even if the walking is not.

**What to skip if tired**: Leave out the private tombs if you want a shorter morning. You can also shorten or skip the temple; choose around the confirmed routes and how you feel that day.

Day 05

### The village and Medinet Habu

**Start**: At the crossing early

**Finish**: Back across by lunch, with the afternoon free

Stops

1. [Deir el-Medina](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/deir-el-medina)

    About 1 hour

Begin with the village’s surviving streets and rooms, viewed from the permitted paths. Allow for exposed ground, then check which tombs are open and whether their descents suit you.

2. [Medinet Habu](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/medinet-habu)

    About 1.5 hours

At Medinet Habu, focus on the painted reliefs beneath surviving roofed sections and compare them with the exposed courts. Arrange your rest separately; seating has not been verified.

3. [Valley of the Queens](https://luxor101.com/ancient-luxor/valley-of-the-queens) Optional

    About 1 hour

Close to both, small, and genuinely optional — a fifth morning that ends after two stops is a good fifth morning.

Plan the day

**Heat exposure**: High

**Walking**: Moderate

**Food and rest**: Arrange a seated break before or after Medinet Habu. Leave the afternoon free, and add time on the river only if it suits your energy and confirmed boat arrangements.

**Transport**: Ferry and taxi, and the shortest circuit of the five days: all three possible stops are at the southern end of the west bank and minutes apart by road.

**What to skip if tired**: Leave out the Valley of the Queens for a shorter morning. One site, or a rest day, is also an option; adjust the circuit before you become tired.

## Reading for the journey

[

### Reading the Colour That Survives

Paint survives where materials and conditions have allowed it to remain, sometimes with conservation support. Weathering, salts, moisture and past interventions help explain losses; bright colour alone does not mean a wall is intact.

### Choosing Tombs in the Valley of the Kings

Choose KV34 for its distinctive Amduat drawings if the demanding route suits you, KV17 for carved funerary scenes, or KV62 for Tutankhamun’s burial setting. Confirm which tombs are open and separately ticketed before choosing.

### Deir el-Medina: The Ancient Egyptian Village That Makes the Tombs Feel Human

The writings from Deir el-Medina include work records, letters, accounts and religious texts. They reveal parts of a royal workforce’s lives, filtered through what people recorded and what survived.

### How to Read an Egyptian Temple

Start with the route from gateway to court, columned hall and sanctuary. Then read one wall scene by identifying the figures, their actions and the surrounding inscriptions.
