Where can a knowledgeable licensed guide add most to my visit?
Do you need a guide in Luxor?
A good guide is especially useful at Karnak, where buildings from different reigns overlap, and on the nobles’ hillside, where local knowledge helps with routes and access. Independent visits can be rewarding too. Choose the days when explanation or practical help matters most to you, and ask about the guide’s licence, language and interests. A tourist-guide licence and an academic qualification in Egyptology are not the same thing.
Before you go
At Karnak, ask for a guide who can explain the building phases as well as identify gods and kings. At the nobles’ tombs, ask about the places you hope to enter and the route between them. A guide can help you notice details without turning the whole day into a lecture.
The other sites can be explored independently with some preparation. How much help you want depends on your interests, confidence and preferred pace, not on a rule that everyone needs a guide everywhere.
Ask about licensing, language and relevant experience. If academic Egyptology training matters to you, ask about it specifically rather than inferring it from the word “guide”.
Agree the sites, duration, transport, admissions and any separately ticketed tombs in writing. Check whether explanation is permitted inside the spaces you will visit or takes place outside. Ask for time to look quietly and make your own photographs where allowed.
