How accessible are the sites for a wheelchair user, or for someone who cannot manage stairs or heat?

Accessibility needs checking for the exact route you want to take. Temple courtyards, museum galleries, hillside chapels and descending tombs present different barriers. We have not carried out an on-site access audit, so our descriptions are planning prompts, not a guarantee of step-free access or suitable facilities. Confirm surfaces, thresholds, slopes, toilets, drop-off and assistance directly before travelling.
Before you go
Start with the questions that matter to you. A step-free entrance does not establish a step-free route through a building. A ramp may still be steep or uneven, and a short visit may involve a long approach from the car park.
Our site guides separate ground surface, stairs, seating, shade, toilets, vehicle drop-off, sensory conditions, enclosed spaces and walking distance. None substitutes for a current assessment of the route and equipment you need.
For temples, ask about thresholds and the surfaces between courts. For tombs, ask about the descent, handrails, passage widths and return climb. At Deir el-Bahari and hillside tombs, check both the approach and the interior. For a museum, confirm lifts and accessible facilities rather than assuming a modern building has everything in service.
Discuss transport before arrival. Ask where a vehicle can actually stop, whether transfers are needed and what assistance is available. Get measurements or recent route information when a detail determines whether you can visit.
Heat, fatigue, lighting and enclosed spaces can matter as much as stairs. Leave time to rest and agree a way to shorten the visit. If heat presents a medical concern, seek individual advice.
We have not completed an on-site access audit. Keep that limitation in view even where the guide describes a surface or layout confidently, and confirm essential details with the site or a provider who can check them for you.
This changes. Accessibility fields on the site pages are recorded dimension by dimension and are largely unverified: nobody has yet visited with a checklist. Where a field is empty it says "we have not yet verified this" rather than guessing, and none of it should be relied on without confirming at the site.
