Is Luxor a good place to bring children, and how should the days be different?

Luxor can work well with children if you follow their interests and energy. Start with one main site, a few details to look for and a proper break afterwards. A boat, a painted animal or the plan of a village house may hold more interest than another long court. Check heat, steps, enclosed spaces and facilities before choosing the day’s stops. There is no need to finish an adult itinerary.
Before you go
Choose one question or detail for each visit. At Karnak, the mud-brick construction ramp can start a conversation about building. At Deir el-Medina, the house plans give a sense of where the tomb workers and their families lived.
Choose tombs by their actual scenes and access, not simply by fame. Nobles’ chapels may show harvests, workshops and banquets; the decorated burial chambers at Deir el-Medina are especially rich in religious and afterlife imagery. Some children enjoy enclosed spaces and others do not, so explain the descent and return before entering.
Build in water, sun protection and rest. A short visit that ends while everyone is still interested is a successful visit. A ferry or boat outing can be part of the day, provided boarding and suitable safety equipment have been checked.
Confirm toilets and any other essential facilities rather than assuming they are available at a museum or gate. For young children, ask about surfaces and steps before bringing a pushchair. Keep a way to shorten the route.
Older children may enjoy questions with no neat answer: why a royal image was erased, what a workman wrote down, or how archaeologists reconstruct a broken wall. Leave room for their questions, including the ones this guide cannot settle.
