Before you go

Check three things for every visit: when the site opens, when ticket sales or last admission stop, and when you must leave. These may be different times. Give yourself enough room to enjoy the visit after entering.

Opening hours belong to individual venues, not to whole banks of the river. Luxor Temple has an evening visiting tradition, but Karnak, museums and west-bank sites need separate checks. Seasonal, Ramadan and holiday arrangements can change; do not infer a timetable from the time of sunset.

An open site may contain closed tombs, chapels or galleries. Conservation work and other restrictions can affect individual spaces without closing the whole monument. Confirm access to any interior that is central to your plans.

For a hot day, aim to visit exposed sites early and rest during the hottest hours. Fit later visits around confirmed opening times. A museum is only a useful midday option if it is open then.
