The route at a glance

Five days give the main visits more room, with one or two sites on most days and generous breaks. Day two includes Luxor Temple late in the day, subject to current hours; the plan is not mornings-only.

The Ramesseum is not a scheduled stop in this outline. It can replace another visit if it interests you, but there is no need to add it simply because a gap appears. Check each route and admission separately: slower pacing does not remove stairs, uneven ground or heat.

Day01

Karnak, and nothing else

    2–3 hours, and you may want to come back

    Give Karnak time without trying to cover every corner. Follow the main axis, choose a permitted rest place and consider the Festival Hall if the route is open and your energy allows.

Day02

The museum, then Luxor Temple at dusk

    1–1.5 hours

    Choose a few objects to spend time with, rather than trying to see everything. Confirm opening hours and any seating or access arrangements you need before setting out.

  2. Luxor Temple

    1–1.5 hours

    Consider an evening visit after a long break, if opening hours allow. Its central location can simplify the transfer, but check the entrance route and surfaces against your needs.

    Choose a small number of tombs after checking their routes and current opening status. Arrange a rest outside the circuit; shade, seating and comfortable indoor temperatures are not guaranteed.

Deir el-Bahari, and the hillside if you want it

    1–1.5 hours

    The temple lies beyond the ridge from the valley. Its approach and terraces are largely exposed, so choose a cooler visiting period when hours allow and adapt to the day’s conditions.

  2. Tombs of the NoblesOptional

    1–2 hours, depending on how many tomb groups you visit

    An optional hillside visit. Confirm the chosen chapels, their entrances and the transfer; exposed paths and climbs may make this a better stop for another day.

The village and Medinet Habu

    About 1 hour

    Begin with the village’s surviving streets and rooms, viewed from the permitted paths. Allow for exposed ground, then check which tombs are open and whether their descents suit you.

  2. Medinet Habu

    About 1.5 hours

    At Medinet Habu, focus on the painted reliefs beneath surviving roofed sections and compare them with the exposed courts. Arrange your rest separately; seating has not been verified.

  3. Valley of the QueensOptional

    About 1 hour

    Close to both, small, and genuinely optional — a fifth morning that ends after two stops is a good fifth morning.

Reading for the journey

Reading the Colour That Survives

Paint survives where materials and conditions have allowed it to remain, sometimes with conservation support. Weathering, salts, moisture and past interventions help explain losses; bright colour alone does not mean a wall is intact.

Choosing Tombs in the Valley of the Kings

Choose KV34 for its distinctive Amduat drawings if the demanding route suits you, KV17 for carved funerary scenes, or KV62 for Tutankhamun’s burial setting. Confirm which tombs are open and separately ticketed before choosing.

The writings from Deir el-Medina include work records, letters, accounts and religious texts. They reveal parts of a royal workforce’s lives, filtered through what people recorded and what survived.

Start with the route from gateway to court, columned hall and sanctuary. Then read one wall scene by identifying the figures, their actions and the surrounding inscriptions.
